FAQ's

Is it possible to drive past Deadhorse all the way to the ocean?

  • The answer is no.   The road officially ends at Deadhorse. The only access to the Arctic Ocean is by guided tour. Stop into either of the 2 hotels in Deadhorse for more information.

Can you drive to Prudhoe Bay in the Winter?

  • Yes, the Dalton Highway is open in the winter but can be very treacherous and it's not recommended for the novice northern traveler.

Is it possible to obtain permission to use the photos that are currently posted on www.prudhoebay.com?

  • Yes it is possible. I have been asked several times to use my photos. I appreciate the honest ones out there that do ask and 90% of the time all that I ask is a link back or credit. Please ask me first so I know where my photos are being used and why.

Who do I talk to to find out about job openings on the North Slope?

  • This is perhaps the question I get asked the most. Please please please, do not email me asking me to assist you in finding a job. The northern oil companies have employment procedures and they abide by them faithfully. Most have websites with employment information on them there. I have linked the ones I am aware of. If anyone has any good links for employment in Northern Alaska I would be happy to post it.

Are there reasonable lodging options available when we drive up the Dalton Highway?
  • Lodging options a few and far between and prices can be a bit steep depending on the season. Always travel over the Dalton Highway prepared to sleep in your vehicle if necessary. It can and has happened many times to travelers.

When does it usually start to snow in Northern Alaska?

  • That, of course, can vary from year to year but old timers will tell you that they've seen it spit snow in early to mid September.

Can I send photos that I have of the North Slope and Dalton Highway?

  • Yes, but please email me first before you send them. I will not open any emails with attachments if I do not know who it is from.

We heard that a permit is needed to drive the "Haul Road".  Is this true?

  • No, this is no longer true. The Dalton Highway is open year around to the general public all the way to Deadhorse.
